When a pitcher on acid throws a no-hitter, the world calls it a miracle.
In the shadows beyond the stadium lights, something else calls it an opening.
Seams of the Infinite is a horror novella that treats Dock Ellis’s legendary game as the first visible fracture in reality.
'Dock had fallen asleep with the television still glowing, a soft square of light humming in the dark motel room. Flip Wilson had been on. The Flip Wilson Show was brand-new, everybody was talking about it. Dock had laughed himself half to sleep, Geraldine cracking wise in that high voice, hips swinging, “The devil made me do it.” America loved it. Black, white, young, old; they all tuned in. A Black man in a dress could make the whole country howl.
But Dock knew it wasn’t just laughs. Flip was sharp. He was slipping jabs past the guard, showing the absurdity of it all. Dock thought about how Geraldine was welcome in living rooms across America while Black kids in Oakland were getting beat down for raising a fist. Flip was the salve; the Panthers were the wound.'
